| New Services for Tourists in Chernihiv |
| Viktoria Sydorova, an alumna of the Community Connections Historical and Cultural Preservation group, is now applying her CC training to promote tourism in Chernihiv. |
Online Marketplace with Arts and Crafts Souvenirs
Sydorova, a journalist who writes for the Arts and Culture section of the weekly newspaper Seven Days, and the online portal http://gorod.cn.ua, spent time in the U.S. learning how to creatively increase tourism. After her return to Ukraine, she published five articles about her CC experiences and training, including preservation techniques used in the U.S. The articles generated interest from the community, especially among entrepreneurs eager to increase visitors and visitor services in the region.
Several key initiatives have already been undertaken. One local businessman started a taxi-tour service, which takes passengers to their destinations and provides short, informative excursions in the city. The project was launched with Sydorova’s support, and is now successfully in operation. Serhiy Layevskyy, a group member and the Director of the Regional Historical Museum, also organized bus excursions in Chernihiv. Sydorova also used her column to push for the creation of city maps for tourists. Several businessmen and tourism information centers then printed maps for free distribution in hotels, restaurants and tourist sites. As a result of Sydorova’s outspoken endorsement of improved tourist services, Regional Employment Centers organized skills trainings for 20 tour guides. In addition, Sydorova facilitated a contest between the community and the NGO Public Opinion to commission a sculpture symbolic of the city. The winner of the competition has already been chosen and local businessmen are funding construction of the artwork. Lastly, Sydorova’s experience in the U.S. inspired her to create online marketplaces (http://remesla.cn.ua/) to buy and sell traditional crafts and souvenirs.
Sydorova’s efforts to publicize Chernihiv have been instrumental in bringing positive development into the city, as she continues to promote the very best that the region has to offer.
