Alumni Quotes

After participating in the program I realized that I would like to develop in myself more tolerance toward people, and learn to respect others' opinions.

Music Festival Organized by American Students and CC Alumnus Raises Awareness of Drug Abuse
Roman Unukainen, director of the Psychoneurology and Narcology Department at the Kondopoga Central Regional Hospital in Karelia, participated in a Community Connections exchange in July 2008. As a medical consultant at the hospital’s Youth Friendly Clinic, he wanted to take part in the Youth and Civic Participation Program to learn more about ways to undertake innovative projects that reach young people throughout his community. Through the program, Mr. Unukainen partnered with the University of Washington-Tacoma (Seattle, Washington) to organize a music festival for youth.

The Antidote Rock Festival was held in Kondopoga on September 27, 2008, and featured 14 bands from Karelia and St. Petersburg. The event was designed to raise awareness of drug abuse, and was endorsed by a slate of prominent government and business leaders, including the head of the Kondopoga Municipal Regional Administration.

It was largely due to Roman’s connections with University of Washington’s Adrienne Ione that made this event so colorful. Under her direction, UWT students created promotional material for the festival, as well as posters that were awarded to winners of an anti-narcotics competition. “It was so rewarding to complete this joint project that grew out of the CC program and we look forward to continuing our partnership,” says Mr. Unukainen.
