Alumni Quotes

We are often imprisoned by stereotypes.  Personally I long ago developed an opinion of there being a double standard in the external politics of the United States in imposing their "democratic" values on others.  From this there was a bias against "American" democracy in general.  The trip, however, freed me of many of my stereotypes.  After all, democracy has been around in the U.S. for over 200 years, and public diplomacy is something that is extremely effective and useful.

Your American Family

Host organizations are responsible for administering training and other program components in the United States. This includes not only seminars, site visits, and round table discussions, but also cultural excursions and host families for program participants.

You and your host family might not even speak the same language, but that doesn't mean you won't understand each other! Participant's opportunity to live with an American host family is a very important aspect of the Community Connections program. American host families do not receive payment for their time or effort, working with the program on a completely voluntary basis out of a desire to learn more about other cultures, other people, and to help others understand Americans more closely; public diplomats in a very real sense of the word. Quite often, participants and family remain in touch for a long time, and even visit each other on occasion after the program has been completed.

Annual Report - 2008
Attention! Community Connections Annual Report – 2008 is published on the website. 12 groups from Russia participated in training programs in 10 states. Twelve host organizations prepared professional and cultural programs for 118 Russian specialists. The program results are reviewed in the Annual Report – 2008!

Program's results

Alumni of the Community Connections program participate in an online survey, which is administered six months after they completed the program. The goal of the survey is to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and to allow alumni to share news of projects and achievements they have implemented as a result of what they learned from the program. Read about alumni survey results.
